Coleraine College Geography Department
Geography is about helping pupils to understand the constantly changing physical and human environment in which they live. The Geography Department intends to expose all pupils to positive learning experiences. Through these it is hoped that they will acquire a positive attitude towards themselves, fellow citizens and others in the wider world. It is also hoped to encourage a positive attitude towards their environment.
KEY STAGE 3
In Year 8 pupils will learn about current issues such as what Europe does for us, settlement growth and urban problems. They also learn essential skills like reading maps and general local and global geographical knowledge. Pupils get to carry out an urban study of Coleraine developing their fieldwork techniques.
In Years 9 and 10 pupils continue to investigate relevant and current issues and events, including:
KEY STAGE 4
Geography is offered as a GCSE option at Key Stage 4 and pupils follow the AQA syllabus. GCSE Geography provides the opportunity for students to fully appreciate and learn about the world around them.
There are four units involved in the course:
Unit 1: Managing places in the 21st Century – The Urban Environment
Unit 2: Hostile World – Living with Natural Hazards
Unit 3: Investigating the Shrinking World – Investigating Global Tourism
Unit 4: Controlled Assessment – Geographical and local investigation
BTEC Travel and Tourism at Key Stage 4
This course provides the opportunity for students to learn about the Travel and Tourism industry in a practical and ‘hands on’ way through coursework and investigation. Throughout the course students develop the general skills, knowledge and understanding that underpin Travel and Tourism occupations and professions – a major employer in the Causeway Coast area.
The units of work studied include:
• Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
• Understanding World Travel
• Holiday destinations
POST-16 Travel and Tourism is offered as an option at post-16 at AS and A2 level. Pupils follow the OCR syllabus which includes units on customer service, travel destinations, event management and the guided tour. The Department strives to give pupils the skills and knowledge that can lead to being informed and concerned citizens and gaining employment and enhanced leisure time.
Fieldwork is an integral part of the department and all pupils are given the opportunity to participate in Field Trips.
